The game was critically acclaimed upon its release, and as of 2008 it had sold over 2 million copies. The gameplay is adapted from 2nd edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rules, featuring a mixture of turn-based and pausable real-time combat. It is the first game in the Baldur's Gate series, and is set in the Sword Coast region of Faerûn.
